A stunning location

Smarden

Smarden is a small picturesque village, often called the 'loveliest village in Kent' and after a visit, you'll know why as it is a beautiful Kentish weavers' village with around 200 buildings of architectural and historical note. You'll find three pubs within walking distance, a butchers, a vintage shop and an art gallery. 3.5 miles away is the town of Headcorn where larger shops and a mainline train station can be found.

Close by guests can explore Sissinghurst Castle and Gardens, Leeds Castle and Bodiam Castle. There is a golf club close by at Chart Hills and fishing lakes at Cackle Hill. Historic Rye is 19 miles away, Camber Sands is just a few miles further along the coast.

The Kent and East Sussex Railway is in Tenterden, which is known as the Jewel in the Weald locally, with lots of independent shops, restaurants, cafes and pubs. There are vineyard tours and tastings at Chapel Down in Small Hythe, near Tenterden and Hush Heath Winery in Staplehurst.

The name Smarden comes from the Saxon for 'butter valley' and 'pasture'.

There are some beautiful walks and footpaths in and around the village with some lovely examples of medieval houses and a choice of three pubs in which to enjoy a refreshment or two!

Don’t miss a visit to St Michael the Archangel commonly known as “the barn of Kent” due to the width of the scissor brace roof which spans an aisle less nave that is 11 metres in width.

Smarden has an excellent local butcher Dave who makes the famous Smarden Sizzler Sausages! Tell Dave you are from The Cloth Hall and I’m sure he will pick out the best ones for you. He also has an excellent selection of local meats and other local produce, such as eggs, dairy and vegetables. We also have a small vintage treasure shop, which is quite fun to browse and a lovely little Art Gallery showcasing great local artists.

If you are feeling slightly more energetic, Smarden has it’s own little running club- ‘Run Rural’ which meets every Sunday at 9.50am at the Sports Pavilion, any age, any ability and they will take you trail running. They also do other sessions on a Monday & Thursday evenings please contact Carl Adams from Run Rural.

Smarden also has a tennis court near the sports pavilion, which does need a little TLC but is ideal for a knock about and there is always access to it.
